Dr. Sue Health Tips COVID-19 Positive Entertainment

Here are Health Tips to Prevent Infection! Don’t touch your face! COVID-19, like most coronaviruses and the flu, enter the body through the mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, and mouth – all of them on the face. I realized that one of the main reasons that I touch my face is to brush away my loose hair that falls on my face. So I fastened my hair with a scrunchy and tucked it under my cap. Wearing the cap also reminds me – don’t touch my face! I’m on my solo walk in the park. I’m keeping social distance – with fresh air, sunshine, flowers,… and a curious squirrel who ran up to my feet. But I walked away. Better rude than sorry 🙂 Touching your face is an unconscious habit, and it’s easy to slip – so wash or sanitize your hands as soon as you get home – do it regularly. Cover your nose and mouth. Health Care Workers need medical-grade masks but a scarf or home-made mask offers some protection Avoid touching paper and public surfaces – that includes cash, receipts, doorknobs, railings, etc. Hydration, multivitamins and particularly zinc are helpful for body’s defense against all viruses. Use as directed. Excess of  any vitamins and minerals not recommended and could actually lower your immune response. Do not take Ibuprofen or Advil – unless truly necessary. According to some sources, these drugs make the virus much worse – with patients winding up on ventilators. This warning about Ibuprofen and Advil is disputed, but we say, why take the risk? Be mindful of early symptoms of COVID-19, which include:
  • Feeling achy or exhausted
  • unusual sniffles
  • low grade temp or flushing
  • alteration of smell or taste.
If symptoms progress to frequent coughing or Shortness of Breath, seek medical care immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to keep the morbidity and mortality low. Health Advice comes from Medical Doctors with Experience in Infectious Respiratory Disease.  Here’s my Video with Health Tips!

Dr. Sue Daffodils Positive Entertainment

Dr. Sue Nature & Poetry Positive Entertainment

Hello. This is Dr. Sue (Susan Horowitz, Ph.D,) I live in Manhattan, New York, the epicenter of our current pandemic. I say “current” because, this too shall pass – especially if we take care of our health – physical and mental. It’s March, 2020, early spring – one of my favorite times of year. I’ve been spending lots of time in my apartment. I wanted fresh air and a way to connect to the beauty of nature. Social distancing is important, so I decided to go for a solo walk in a local park – no mass transportation, and no crowds. After a short walk in the park, I came across these beautiful fields of daffodils. (Please scroll down for video). These golden-trumpeted flowers reminded me of the ending lines from one of my favorite poems: “I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud” by William Wordsworth, written in the early 19th century. The last line of the poem is: “And then my heart with pleasure fills and dances with the daffodils.” Wordsworth writes about how, when he is feeling depressed,  (“in vacant or in pensive mood”),  he remembers the daffodils moving in the wind. The memory lifts his spirits and he feels pleasure as he imagines “his heart…dancing with the daffodils.” Many of us are feeling isolated and lonely and bored as we self-isolate to protect our health, and the health of our loved ones and community. This is the wise and generous thing to do. It’s easy to become depressed as the public media and worried friends share frightening statistics and stories – – and interpretations that can lead to personal despair. What can we do? We can take care of our physical health, and by now, we know what to do (social distance, hygiene, etc.) We can take care of our mental and spiritual health. We can manage and limit our exposure to negativity. We can focus on opportunities for growth and learning, on healthy routines, on hobbies, and on beauty. We can enjoy the beauty of nature – either in reality (like my solo walk), in memory (like William Wordsworth’s poem), or virtually (in videos, photographs, and text). I hope you enjoy this video of me and my daffodils! Dr. Sue Shares Uplifting Poem About Daffodils

Dr. Sue Cremini's Positive Entertainment

Dr. Sue: Cremini’s Restaurant Positive Entertainment

Cremini’s Restaurant a “delizioso” (the Italian word for “delicious”) taste of Italy in Brooklyn, New York.

What is a “cremini”? A sweet dessert that combines perfectly with the salty taste of an “Ascolana” (stuffed) olive.

Cremini’s Restaurant invites you to sample varieties of both (with and without meat).

Ascolana olives and cremini’s come from Le Marche region on the east coast of Italy on the Adriatic Sea.

Le Marche is also famous for “crescia” – Italian flatbread – hand-made into appetizing sandwiches and a fettucini pasta (molded into a mound).

Italian “cucina” (cuisine) is best washed down with wine. So sample some favorites from the vineyards of Le Marche: “Passeria Brut” – a sparkling white wine that is a richer version of Prosecco.

Or try the “Lacrima” red wine. “Lacrima” means “tears” in Italian – which is close to Latin.

(To my surprise, I was able to remember “lacrima” from my high school Latin class – when we read “The Iliad” in Latin.

As my students once reminded me “Nothing you learn is ever a waste!”)

It’s so true – culture, language, and variety of accents enrich our enjoyment of wine and food – and vice versa.

I hope my blog opens the door to appreciate the rich variety of cultures and wines – wherever you live.

Care to try a little Italian? Can you say “Mi piace” (“I like it”)? Or enjoy my original, multi-lingual song “Te Amo/Ti Amo (I Love You)” which begins: “I only meant to share some wine….”

You can explore the joys of local wines and vineyards when you Discover Upstate New York https://www.discoverupstateny.com/dine-stay/wineries-vineyards/

Dr. Sue: Slow Wine Tour @Eataly Positive Entertainment

Slow Wine – like Slow Food – and Eataly Food Emporium and Restaurant are celebrations of delicious, natural wines and foods.

Rooted in Mediterranean tradition, Slow Wine has branched out to become an international phenomenon, with vineyards in Italy, and now, in California, Oregon, and New York – plus recipes, books, restaurants… and more!

Now you can sample “delizioso” (the Italian word for “delicious”) wine and foods and take a Slow Wine Tour of the US: https://www.slowwineusa.com/us-tour

You can explore the joys of local wines and vineyards when you Discover Upstate New York https://www.discoverupstateny.com/dine-stay/wineries-vineyards/

Taking time and care in cultivation of the best quality grapes and the fermentation process, and combining wine with wholesome, natural foods is for all seekers of a slower, healthier, and more satisfying life.

How fabulously fitting that Eataly – Eataly.com – based in Italy, and now an expanding series of world-wide outposts of Italian foods should host the tenth anniversary of the Slow Wine Tour of Italian (and Italian-inspired) wines.

Wine, Food, and Music are the food of love and friendship. I love to sing my own, original, multi-lingual song “Te Amo/Ti Amo (I Love You)” which begins: “I only meant to share some wine….”

Here is my interview with Giancarlo Gariglio, wine expert and author of “Slow Wine: A Year in the Life of Slow Wine.”

If you listen carefully, you’ll hear me try a little Italian. Can you say “Mi piace” (“I like it”)?

Dr. Sue Dance Flurry Positive Entertainment

Dr. Sue: Dance Flurry 2020 Positive Entertainment

Dance Flurry is a trip around the dance floor – and the world! Every February, Dance Flurry defies the winter cold of Upstate New York, by hosting an annual (indoor) celebration of live music and dance in Saratoga Springs, New York! You can test your terpsichordian* talents with multi-cultural dances *”Terpsichordian” is the Greek-origin word for dance. But you don’t have to spell it – dancing is for doers! 🙂 The ballrooms at the Saratoga City Center and Hilton are filled with enthusiastic contra dancers – inter-generational, gender-flexible, multi-cultural, beginners, experts, and everything in-between – plus live bands! Contra dance partners pass up and down long lines interacting with other couples. The music – echoed by the swirling, stamping  crowd – is an energetic Americanized version of English country dancing, Irish jigs, reels, techno, etc. Other ballrooms and and workshops invite you to be a “hep cat” with swing music from the 1930’s or 1940’s with top bands like Jay Ungar and Molly Mason http://jayandmolly.com/  (I love swing – in fact, I wrote a swing song “Everybody Goes Wow!” for my original musical “SssWitch” SssWitch.net ) You can fall in love – or find a friend of any gender – to a tender waltz like “Ashokan Farewell” by Jay Ungar, the sound track to the famous Ken Burns PBS series on The Civil War. Live out your Latin dreams on interactive dance-music tours to Cuba or Dominican Republic with metamovements.com Or let your hips sway to a Latin rhythms by The Ladybugs in local ballrooms. You can work your body to a Hip-Hop beat with choreographers Ray F. Davis and Carla Giudcelli. I was having so much fun in the hip-hop workshop, I didn’t even know it was hip-hop! (which turns out to be a huge umbrella that can include people of all ages and backgrounds) You can enjoy the haunting spirituality of Native American flute music and hear the Algonquin language spoken by the indigenous people of upstate New York (and beyond). You can open your ears and mind to middle-Eastern music, complex rhythms and culture with Karim Nagy. You can enjoy a concert of Argentinian tangoes with the authentic orchestra of of pedroguirado.com  The instruments include the bandonion – a uniquely complex version of an accordian. You will be amazed by the inventive sounds of a tango violin, piano, and bass (played by band leader Pedro Guirado). But beware – it’s easy to fall in passionate love to this music. In fact, I wrote a song called “Blame It On the Tango.” (My lyrics rhyme “gaucho love” with “couch ‘o love”) Looking foward to more events from DanceFlurry.com  Hope we can share a dance! Thanks to Journalist Carla Marie Rupp for photo!

Dr. Sue Help Center Positive Entertainment

Dr. Sue: Free Legal Help NYC Positive Entertainment

Share a Ride – Save five thousand dollars ($5,000) !

You can – when you learn to Be Your Brightest Friend!

Sharing a ride is the bright way to travel around New York City. It’s less stressful than the subway and less expensive than solo rides. I use Via Car Service ridewithvia.com (let me know if I should refer you).

Save a Hat is what my fellow passenger did when my favorite hat fell on the floor – black side up and hard to see. As she was exiting, she said “Your hat fell on the floor.” Sure enough – there it was with its golden treble clef that symbolizes my love of music! Her behavior told me more about her character than any internet profile or job resume! And it started my morning with faith in human nature – and some members of the legal profession. You see, she spoke in an intelligent manner, and she exited our Via Car near the Manhattan Courthouse at 9 am. This told me that she probably worked in some legal capacity….right?

Now the question you’re all waiting for…. how did I save five-thousand dollars ($5,000) ?

I was on my way to the Brooklyn Surrogate Court to pursue my own case. I was representing myself because lawyers are expensive, and I figured I could do my own digging and get the help I needed – at least, for now. If I needed a lawyer – I would cross that expensive bridge when I came to it (probably a $5,000 retainer…and billing at $400/hour).

Guess what? The Brooklyn Surrogate Court (and many other courts) have a Help Center for people who don’t have lawyers. Of course, I had to figure out to solve some tricky issues (like confusing legal forms, finding a capable, convenient process server (Thanks EmpireLegalService.com ) – and find free Legal Help (scroll down for the link)

My first court date was in the pouring rain when I was on crutches! But my dear friend/stained glass artist & repairs Dennis Lynch (http://astainedglass.com/ ) drove me in his car (which he named “Sue” – after me). We drove in “A Car Named Sue” to the handicapped entrance of the courthouse. I staggered in on my crutch with an injured knee but a determined mind! I looked pathetic in the courtroom – so much the better!

What about saving five-thousand dollars ($5,000)?

That’s how much my opponent’s lawyer charged today – just for showing up in court and a few hours of easy work. I would have had to pay my own lawyer much more money (for more time). But despite the hard work, it’s been an exciting challenge – and I learned a lot about free legal help!

Here’s a link to free Legal Help: https://www.nycourts.gov/courthelp/GoingToCourt/gettingHelp.shtml

Can you do it too? I can’t be sure. But for sure, you can do a lot more than you think you can – just Be Your Brightest Friend!
