Share a Ride – Save five thousand dollars ($5,000) !
You can – when you learn to Be Your Brightest Friend!
Sharing a ride is the bright way to travel around New York City. It’s less stressful than the subway and less expensive than solo rides. I use Via Car Service ridewithvia.com (let me know if I should refer you).
Save a Hat is what my fellow passenger did when my favorite hat fell on the floor – black side up and hard to see. As she was exiting, she said “Your hat fell on the floor.” Sure enough – there it was with its golden treble clef that symbolizes my love of music! Her behavior told me more about her character than any internet profile or job resume! And it started my morning with faith in human nature – and some members of the legal profession. You see, she spoke in an intelligent manner, and she exited our Via Car near the Manhattan Courthouse at 9 am. This told me that she probably worked in some legal capacity….right?
Now the question you’re all waiting for…. how did I save five-thousand dollars ($5,000) ?
I was on my way to the Brooklyn Surrogate Court to pursue my own case. I was representing myself because lawyers are expensive, and I figured I could do my own digging and get the help I needed – at least, for now. If I needed a lawyer – I would cross that expensive bridge when I came to it (probably a $5,000 retainer…and billing at $400/hour).
Guess what? The Brooklyn Surrogate Court (and many other courts) have a Help Center for people who don’t have lawyers. Of course, I had to figure out to solve some tricky issues (like confusing legal forms, finding a capable, convenient process server (Thanks EmpireLegalService.com ) – and find free Legal Help (scroll down for the link)
My first court date was in the pouring rain when I was on crutches! But my dear friend/stained glass artist & repairs Dennis Lynch (http://astainedglass.com/ ) drove me in his car (which he named “Sue” – after me). We drove in “A Car Named Sue” to the handicapped entrance of the courthouse. I staggered in on my crutch with an injured knee but a determined mind! I looked pathetic in the courtroom – so much the better!
What about saving five-thousand dollars ($5,000)?
That’s how much my opponent’s lawyer charged today – just for showing up in court and a few hours of easy work. I would have had to pay my own lawyer much more money (for more time). But despite the hard work, it’s been an exciting challenge – and I learned a lot about free legal help!
Here’s a link to free Legal Help: https://www.nycourts.gov/courthelp/GoingToCourt/gettingHelp.shtml
Can you do it too? I can’t be sure. But for sure, you can do a lot more than you think you can – just Be Your Brightest Friend!

New York Art is a Manhattan Gallery, Website/App, Touring Exhibition, Art Show/Party in Tribeca, NY – and the vision of Artist-Owner-Shane Townley!
Shane and I are standing in front of a sign for Gallery 104, his first venture in the New York art scene – a tiny gallery, where we first met a few years ago. That little seed has put down roots in Manhattan bedrock with an upstairs gallery at 7 Franklin Place and a vast downstairs Exhibition/Work Space for artists that hosts a new show/reception/arts salon on the first Thursday of every month! (May 2, June 6, July 4, Aug 1, Sept 5…)
https://newyorkart.com/
The main gallery space is one floor below street level, and one floor below that is the raw space where New York Art houses its touring collection of artworks – designed to raise awareness, funds, and art supplies for children abandoned in hospitals. This sub-basement remains at a chilly 65 degrees – perfect for a wine cellar where collectors of fine wines can store and share rare vintages.
If climbing those stairs seems daunting, consider this. My first visit to New York Art’s underground gallery took place in December 2018 – before there were stairs – just a thin metal ladder from street level to a dark, unfinished basement space. Shane, his long-legged Artist-Curator Cathy Condon, and a few bold souls had managed the ladder. I have short legs and a fear of heights. But Cathy offered to hold my bag and go first – so I tried it. It was a true challenge, thrill, and adventure – what New York dreams are made of!

“Happy If Happy When”
is a fun,positive musical
about a family who moves
to a run-down farm
to pursue a dream!
The talented cast is headed by
Mom, a dancer, played by
Kimerer L La Mothe
(Book, Music, Lyrics, Director),
and Dad, a composer, played by
Geoffey K Gee
(Music, Arrangements, Music Director)
seek artistic self-expression and freedom
from the urban rat race.
Their five children, played by Jordan Geoffrey LaMothe, Jessica Kimerer Gee, Kyra Lewis Gee, Kai Evenson LaMothe, Leif LaMothe Gee – want horses, cows, chickens, ducks – except for one of them – who rebels and wants out of the whole deal.
As you may have guessed from the names, the on-stage show was inspired by the real-life family of its cast/creators. In 2005, Kimerer L. LaMothe and her husband Geofferey K Gee moved to the country with their three older children (the younger children were born on the farm). They have been performing together since 2012, originally in cabaret-style variety shows. In 2016, the musical “Hamilton” happened, and LaMothe/Gee started writing a book musical loosely based on their lives, which premiered in Salem, NY in July 2017.
In 2018, “Happy If Happy When” was accepted by Planet Connections Music Festival. LaMothe also joined Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) and participated in the TRU Writer-Producer Speed Date, where she met Gene Fisch, Jr., Executive Director of New York New Works Theatre Festival (NYNW), who invited them to submit – and they were accepted.
Here’s what Gene has to say, “One of the fantastic gratifications of the New York New Works Theatre Festival is being able to watch a piece evolve through the creative process into a commercial run. Being able to Executive Produce “Happy If Happy When” with Ron Meyers and the LaMothe family represents the best that theatre has to offer. The story of a family performed by a family is, in my opinion, something that resonates with all of us and is the creation of art for all the right reasons.”
At their second performance at NYNW, producer Ronald J. Meyers, who was in the audience, contacted them with the intention of producing a preview, limited engagement test run at the Gene Frankel Theatre, December 2018. They are now aiming for a 3-5 week Off-Broadway run in Spring 2019.
Here’s my interview with producer Ronald J. Meyers (RM):
Dr. Susan Horowitz, a.k.a. “Dr. Sue” – (SH): What attracted you to produce “Happy If Happy When”?
RM: When I saw the producer’s showcase in the summer of 2017, I was attracted by the notion of the family show and by the preparedness of the five young performers, stage savvy and flawless execution. I noted the quality of the songs that were in that showcase, but actually heard only a small selection. I thought the theme of the play had merit and universal appeal.
SH: How did you connect with “Happy If Happy When”?
RM: When I met the cast at the preparation for the opening, I was further struck by the sense of family The way they prepare for a show is the way they work together in life. Transporting the scenery, setting it up, each up to the requirements of the performance, moving the props and set on stage, taking everything apart afterwards. Then heading back to the farm, the roosters, the hens, the horse, the cow, the duck, the foundry. They are and they live the American dream.
SH: Why did you decide to produce this show?
RM: I optioned several projects, but the cooperative relationship that I established with Kimerer LaMothe directly and with her family indirectly made this my delightful first effort as a producer. I have been a student of drama for three score years, have written plays and movies. So I thought I could bring that knowledge to my projects. Actually Kimerer needed little and no guidance from me. She nailed it, and I told her that..
SH: How do you see the future of this show – venues like Off or Off-Off Broadway, Regional, etc.?
RM: I want to get some more experienced people aboard to help plan our next move. Whether to Regional theater for short runs, off-Broadway, or even a direct move to Broadway since the play is of such high merit. Any producers listening?
SH: Why did you decide to do a test preview run at Gene Frankel Theatre?
RM: It was a personal choice, since I know Gail Thacker to be a classy theatre owner. She truly is and presides over a jewel of a venue!
SH: What did you get out of the Gene Frankel run?
RM: We had ideal support from Gail and Thomas Gordon, and we are greatly indebted to them. We had incredible technical support and stage management.
SH: How do you envision the future journey of this show?
RM: We’ll cross our fingers and see what comes up. We are very comfortable together, and happily the amity mirrors the amity of that family that explodes on the stage in the musical. I have enjoyed every performance, and note that each performance was better as the cast settled in and rose to majesty of their roles.
SH: Do you have any general thoughts about commercial potential of family audience musical?
RM: I am even more optimistic than modest Kimerer whose enormous talent shrieks for recognition and the joyous audience musical experience of “Happy If Happy When.”
