New Word with Dr. Sue “Broadway” – Showbiz excitment! How do you get to Broadway?

You can buy a ticket to a show! Broadway shows can be expensive, but well worth it! Or, look for discount options and previews.

You can invest in Broadway shows for special access to stars, opening nights, and more! Or donate (with a tax-deductible contribution).

If you’re an aspiring performer or creator (like Dr. Sue) learn your craft, practice, audition, submit your shows, and begin your journey to Broadway bows! It’s a challenge, but as Dorothy (in Rainbow To Oz) discovered on her road (yellow, like the Playbill program), it’s worth the trip!

New Word with Dr. Sue Broadway – History! I love the thrill of a Broadway show! And what of Broadway long ago?

The Lenape were the indigenous inhabitants of Manhattan, which they called “Manahatta” – meaning “hilly island.”

The word “Broadway”‘ originates from the Dutch “‘Heeren Weigh” meaning “Gentlemen’s Way,” inspired by a similar street in Amsterdam. After the British took over New York from the Dutch, it was renamed “‘Broadway”‘ for its unusual width.

The first theater company appeared downtown in 1750 on Nassau St, performing opera and Shakespearean plays. After the Revolutionary War, other theaters began to pop up, the growth gravitating eventually north to midtown where real estate prices were lower. The expansion and establishment of theaters along Broadway led to the word’s popular use as we know it today.

And now, for on-the-spot excitement, here’s a video of Dr. Sue at a Broadway theatre!

The Heroes of Nine-Eleven

The heroes keep on climbing through the smoke and dust of hell.

I do believe they find their way to heaven.

Their hearts ring out like angels, thought the mighty towers fell.

New Word with Dr. Sue "Hero"

New Word with Dr. Sue “Hero” The Word “Hero” means a person of great character and courage, often someone who puts themself at risk to save others.

A hero is willing to sacrifice personal advantage, safety, and even their life to save others or stand for an ideal.

The word “Hero” comes from the Greek, which literally means “protector” or “defender.”

“Hero,” in Greek, originally meant “warrior” (in the Iliad). It grew to mean a semi-divine being with one immortal parent. For example, Heracles, (who became the Roman Hercules), was part-human, part-divine.

You are invited to be become a hero in your own life. What to you is worth saving? And what will you do to save what you value?

New Word with Dr. Sue "Baby" - "I Can't Give You Anything But Love"

New Word with Dr. Sue “Baby”

New Word with Dr. Sue “Baby”

New Word with Dr. Sue: "Baby" Dr. Sue Sings "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby!"

New Word with Dr. Sue “Baby!” Dr. Sue Sings “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, Baby!” The Rick Bogart Trio swings this jazzy song by Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh! Where? at Tio Pepe NYC! Scroll Down for Singing Video!

New Word “Baby” is old – and new! Scholars trace it back to Middle English (from the Norman conquest in 1066 to the late 15th century). That’s about the time of Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales” (late 14th Century).

Some people think word “baby” imitates an infant’s first sounds (“buh, buh”). Some people connect it to the French “bebe” – which makes sense since the Norman invaders were French. And that links it to “bambino” in Italian, another Romance Language. What about the other meaning of “romance”? How did “baby” turn into slang for a romantic partner?

New Word with Dr. Sue Singer, Songwriter, Speaker, Author, IG @horowitz30

New Word with Dr. Sue. “Baby” as a term of endearment for a romantic partner goes back to the 19th century and blossomed in the 1920’s as “baby vamp” – a popular girl! Soon “baby” became a slangy term of affection as in “I Can’t Give You Anything, but Love, Baby.”

Dorothy Fields’ sassy, vernacular lyrics combined with Jimmy McHugh’s swing jazzy music made the song a hit in 1928. Vocalists include Ella Fitzgerald, Lady Gaga, and Dr. Sue!

Dr. Sue, entertaining, motivational speaker/author, sings in many languages, creates songs and parodies, emcees events and more!

Sue sings and speaks in two voices – sweet as a bird and growly as a bear (or Louis Armstrong)!

Here we are with Dizzy Gillespie and other jazz greats, plus musical instruments, artifacts, and paintings!

Sue sings Jazz with Rick Bogart Trio at Tio Pepe NYC!

Sue loves to sing romantic jazz standards – like the sweetly seductive song “I’m in the Mood for Love.” Lyric is by Dorothy Fields, Music is by Jimmy McHugh (1935). Fields and McHugh songs slide along with silken melodies and sly, conversational wit …

I'M IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE
I'm in the mood for love
Simply because you're near me
Funny, but when you're near me
I'm in the mood for love....

By Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh - 1935

Sue sings Jazz Standard at The Lambs Club, NYC

Sue sings a favorite jazz standard: “The Lady is a Tramp.” Lyric is by Lorenz Hart, Music is by Richard Rodgers -. Rodgers’ music is charmingly tuneful. Lorenz Hart’s lyric is a clever paradox. A “lady” (elegant and well-behaved) is a “tramp” (a disreputable, promiscuous female). In Hart’s version, a “tramp” simply means that she is honest, true-to-herself, unpretentious, and free. (As Hart says in the bridge of the song: she likes the “free, fresh wind in her hair.”) I have to admit that when I sing “The Lady is a Tramp,” I go for the saucy possibities of the word “tramp.” My “lady” may or may not be a “tramp,” but she is a good-humored flirt!

In yet another twist on “The Lady Is a Tramp,” Walt Disney produced an animated feature film called The Lady and the Tramp – 1955. In this twist on the perrenially popular title, The “Lady” and the “Tramp” are dogs! The “Lady” is a well-bred, upscale dog; and the “Tramp” is a scruffy mutt. But despite class differences, they fall in love and wind up sharing a plate of unpretentious spaghetti – which leads to canine romance! Rodgers and Hart would probably approve!

THE LADY IS A TRAMP
She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She loves the theatre and never comes late
She can't be bothered by people she hates
That's why the lady is a tramp...

by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers - 1937

Rainbow to Oz: a New Musical

Synopsis: A grownup Dorothy dreams she’s in Oz, meets friends and foes and learns “You are stronger than any witch and all your fears. You can ride a Rainbow to Oz!” My Journey to Oz On Stage! First stage performance at Ozland Festival and Oz On Stage, Producer Scarlett Antonia in Peekskill, NY. I write the title song “Rainbow to Oz” create a story concert, and travel with Musical Director Stephen Cornine to Peeksville in my rainbow hair bow! But first, a mysterious phone call in Penn Station, NYC!

Rainbow to Oz: A Musical Oz On Stage – A Mysterious Phone Call!

Rainbow to Oz: A Musical Oz On Stage from NYC to Ozland, New York

Rainbow to Oz: A Musical – Journey to Oz On Stage

Rainbow to Oz: A Musical Oz On Stage began with a mysterious phone call. I was in Penn Station, hurrying home from an outdoorsy vacation that fizzled out due to rain. Penn Station was crowded, noisy, far from the peaceful type of vacation venue I had imagined. Suddenly, my cell phone rang! I looked at my phone, and I didn’t recognize the number. I get far too many spam calls, so when I don’t recognize a number, I don’t pick up.

But something told me: “Answer the phone.” Why? I don’t know. I picked up the phone and said, “Hello? Who is this?” A voice I didn’t recognize said, “My name is Scarlett Antonia, and I’m a producer.” A producer? Was she kidding? I said, “How did you find me?”

She continued: “I’m don’t remember. You’re on the Internet, right? Anyway, I’m producing a festival about Oz, and I need a singer. How do you feel about Oz?”

“I said, “I love Oz. When I was a kid, I read every Oz book I could find. And of course, I saw the movie with Judy Garland.”

She said, “Can you sing a song about Oz?”

I said, “I will write you a song about Oz! I’ll be home in thirty minutes. Call me!”

So that’s how I got the job singing at the Ozland Festival, and the following year at Oz On Stage at the Paramount Theatre in Peekskill, New York. That’s how I wrote my title song “Rainbow to Oz.” And that’s how I started writing my full musical Rainbow to Oz!

A month after performing two songs at Scarlett Antonia’s Oz On Stage, I was starring in and producing a staged reading of Rainbow to Oz -the full musical in New York City at The Lambs Club, Inc. – America’s First Professional Theatrical Club, founded in 1874 and still going strong!

What’s next? Please follow my Rainbow to Oz Blog for updates on my musical and life lessons from Oz that you can use in your own life! “You are stronger than any witch and all your fears. You can ride a Rainbow to Oz!” – Susan “Dr. Sue” Horowitz, Creator of Rainbow to Oz.

DrSue_Create Travel Cruise (Cruisin’ Susan) offers Cruise Tips!

  1. What Travel Adventure Is Right for You? What’s important to you? Great food? (No problem). Most cruise lines offer plenty of food with specialty restaurants for items not on the main, free menu and buffet with vegen and ethnic options.
  2. Beverages (Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic) You can usually choose a Drink Package that includes both. Research what the Drink Package offers if it covers what you want, and what you want to pay for. Depending on how much (and what) you drink and your budget considerations, this may or may not be a good idea for you.
  3. Travel Insurance: Usually a Good Idea! Check what your Travel Insurance covers: A family or health emergency? A missed travel connection to the cruise? A sudden health emergency on your trip that requires you to fly home? You can probably afford the cruise (after all, you booked and paid for it). But you may not be able or want to pay for emergency situations… or a cruise that doesn’t happen due to failed connections.
  4. WiFi and Cell Phone Plans: Do you have an International Travel Plan? What does it cover? Does your ship have a WiFi plan, and which one is right for you? For example, what parts of the Caribbean are USVI and how does that affect yout Cell Phone Charge?
  5. Packing: What about size and weight for airplanes – baggage that is checked or carry on? Many airlines offer memberships and credit cards that include one checked bag – so check it out!
  6. Excursions: You can book ahead on the cruise web site or book in port! Stay in touch for Details on DrSue_Create Travel Blogs.
  7. Singles Groups and Couples: I’ll be back with thoughts about solo and group travels (including travel for singles) so stay in touch for Details on DrSue_Create Travel Blogs.
