New York Art – by Dr. Sue

Shane Townley, Owner New York Art, and Dr. Sue

New York Art is a Manhattan Gallery, Website/App, Touring Exhibition, Art Show/Party in Tribeca, NY – and the vision of Artist-Owner-Shane Townley!

Shane and I are standing in front of a sign for Gallery 104, his first venture in the New York art scene – a tiny gallery, where we first met a few years ago. That little seed has put down roots in Manhattan bedrock with an upstairs gallery at 7 Franklin Place and a vast downstairs Exhibition/Work Space for artists that hosts a new show/reception/arts salon on the first Thursday of every month! (May 2, June 6, July 4, Aug 1, Sept 5…)
https://newyorkart.com/

New York Art Gallery Show

The main gallery space is one floor below street level, and one floor below that is the raw space where New York Art houses its touring collection of artworks – designed to raise awareness, funds, and art supplies for children abandoned in hospitals. This sub-basement remains at a chilly 65 degrees – perfect for a wine cellar where collectors of fine wines can store and share rare vintages.

If climbing those stairs seems daunting, consider this. My first visit to New York Art’s underground gallery took place in December 2018 – before there were stairs – just a thin metal ladder from street level to a dark, unfinished basement space. Shane, his long-legged Artist-Curator Cathy Condon, and a few bold souls had managed the ladder. I have short legs and a fear of heights. But Cathy offered to hold my bag and go first – so I tried it. It was a true challenge, thrill, and adventure – what New York dreams are made of!

“Happy If Happy When” Review by Dr. Sue

“Happy If Happy When”

is a fun,positive musical

about a family who moves

to a run-down farm

to pursue a dream!

The talented cast is headed by

Mom, a dancer, played by

Kimerer L La Mothe

(Book, Music, Lyrics, Director),

and Dad, a composer, played by

Geoffey K Gee

(Music, Arrangements, Music Director)

seek artistic self-expression and freedom

from the urban rat race.

Their five children, played by Jordan Geoffrey LaMothe, Jessica Kimerer Gee, Kyra Lewis Gee, Kai Evenson LaMothe, Leif LaMothe Gee – want horses, cows, chickens, ducks – except for one of them – who rebels and wants out of the whole deal.

As you may have guessed from the names, the on-stage show was inspired by the real-life family of its cast/creators. In 2005, Kimerer L. LaMothe and her husband Geofferey K Gee moved to the country with their three older children (the younger children were born on the farm). They have been performing together since 2012, originally in cabaret-style variety shows. In 2016, the musical “Hamilton” happened, and LaMothe/Gee started writing a book musical loosely based on their lives, which premiered in Salem, NY in July 2017.

In 2018, “Happy If Happy When” was accepted by Planet Connections Music Festival. LaMothe also joined Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) and participated in the TRU Writer-Producer Speed Date, where she met Gene Fisch, Jr., Executive Director of New York New Works Theatre Festival (NYNW), who invited them to submit – and they were accepted.

Here’s what Gene has to say, “One of the fantastic gratifications of the New York New Works Theatre Festival is being able to watch a piece evolve through the creative process into a commercial run. Being able to Executive Produce “Happy If Happy When” with Ron Meyers and the LaMothe family represents the best that theatre has to offer. The story of a family performed by a family is, in my opinion, something that resonates with all of us and is the creation of art for all the right reasons.”

At their second performance at NYNW, producer Ronald J. Meyers, who was in the audience, contacted them with the intention of producing a preview, limited engagement test run at the Gene Frankel Theatre, December 2018. They are now aiming for a 3-5 week Off-Broadway run in Spring 2019.

Here’s my interview with producer Ronald J. Meyers (RM):

Dr. Susan Horowitz, a.k.a. “Dr. Sue” – (SH): What attracted you to produce “Happy If Happy When”?

RM: When I saw the producer’s showcase in the summer of 2017, I was attracted by the notion of the family show and by the preparedness of the five young performers, stage savvy and flawless execution. I noted the quality of the songs that were in that showcase, but actually heard only a small selection. I thought the theme of the play had merit and universal appeal.

SH: How did you connect with “Happy If Happy When”?

RM: When I met the cast at the preparation for the opening, I was further struck by the sense of family The way they prepare for a show is the way they work together in life. Transporting the scenery, setting it up, each up to the requirements of the performance, moving the props and set on stage, taking everything apart afterwards. Then heading back to the farm, the roosters, the hens, the horse, the cow, the duck, the foundry. They are and they live the American dream.

SH: Why did you decide to produce this show?

RM: I optioned several projects, but the cooperative relationship that I established with Kimerer LaMothe directly and with her family indirectly made this my delightful first effort as a producer. I have been a student of drama for three score years, have written plays and movies. So I thought I could bring that knowledge to my projects. Actually Kimerer needed little and no guidance from me. She nailed it, and I told her that..

SH: How do you see the future of this show – venues like Off or Off-Off Broadway, Regional, etc.?

RM: I want to get some more experienced people aboard to help plan our next move. Whether to Regional theater for short runs, off-Broadway, or even a direct move to Broadway since the play is of such high merit. Any producers listening?

SH: Why did you decide to do a test preview run at Gene Frankel Theatre?

RM: It was a personal choice, since I know Gail Thacker to be a classy theatre owner. She truly is and presides over a jewel of a venue!

SH: What did you get out of the Gene Frankel run?

RM: We had ideal support from Gail and Thomas Gordon, and we are greatly indebted to them. We had incredible technical support and stage management.

SH: How do you envision the future journey of this show?

RM: We’ll cross our fingers and see what comes up. We are very comfortable together, and happily the amity mirrors the amity of that family that explodes on the stage in the musical. I have enjoyed every performance, and note that each performance was better as the cast settled in and rose to majesty of their roles.

SH: Do you have any general thoughts about commercial potential of family audience musical?

RM: I am even more optimistic than modest Kimerer whose enormous talent shrieks for recognition and the joyous audience musical experience of “Happy If Happy When.”

“Dietrich” Review by Dr. Sue

“Dietrich” Cindy Marinangel & Dr. Sue

“Falling in love again…” with Marlene Dietrich is what you’ll do when you see this extraordinary one-woman show with actress Cindy Marinangel. Set in 1960, when Dietrich, who had escaped Hitler, achieved Hollywood stardom, and entertained US troupes on the front lines of WWII, returns to Berlin to sing to German audiences – and face threats to her life from unrepentant Nazis.

Ms. Marinangel’s performance is amazing – defiant, tender, erotic and historically detailed. She transforms herself into a no-holds-barred Dietrich, who regrets nothing – and reveals everything, including bitter family secrets and hundreds of lovers (of all genders) – told with bawdy good humor.

The excellent script (with an imagined US sergeant interrogating the star) is by Willard Manus (also a novelist and screenwriter). Music Director/Pianist Russell Daisey (who has given international concerts, performed for several US presidents plus high level dignitaries and written original songs (often with lyricist Dr. Judy Kuriansky).

Production team includes: Executive Producer Dr. Judy Kuriansky (media star, philanthropist, clinical psychologist… and former bass player in an all-female rock band); Co-Producer Errol Rappaport (who helps brand international companies, donates his time to noteworthy causes – especially in the health field); Co-Producer Paul Sladkus (musician and TV executive has worked on over 150 Network TV shows, loves to share shows with life-affirming content, especially on his website goodnewsplanet.tv ,); Co-Producer/Web Designer/Social Media Coordinator Lou Matinez (stand-up comic and producer of the Bootleg Comedy Show – bootlegcomedy.com )

“Dietrich” splashed onto the NYC theatre scene at New York New Works (NYNW) Theatre Festival. Festival Director Gene Fisch, Jr., says: “Dietrich exemplifies the essence of what NYNW hopes for…Brilliant writing highlighted by a brilliant performance.”

Other talents include: Glenda Morgan Brown (Accent Coach); Karen Kubeck (Make-up); Maggie O’Brien (Publicity).

The show closes with “Dietrich”/Marinangel’s heartbreaking rendition of Dietrich’s signature song “Lili Marlene” – in a custom-tailored US Army captain’s uniform – not to be missed.

“Dragon Branches”  Painting and Poem by  Susan Horowitz copyright 2018

“Dragon Branches” is designed as a beautiful image, with or without an embedded poem. The image and poem reflect the cross-influences of Eastern and Western cultures. The visual style co-mingles traditional Asian art (plum blossoms) and Western impressionist painters. The poem combines a classical Asian subject (the plum branches survive the winter and the blossoms are the harbingers of early Spring) and traditional symbol – the Dragon. “Dragon Branches” suggests that the life force in living creatures – even those as delicate as flower petals – triumphs over the sleeping death of winter and is as powerful as dragon’s flaming breath. The twisted shape of the branches suggests the twisting Asian dragon; the abstract, red flowers suggests the flaming breath of a dragon. Here is the poem:

“Dragon Branches”

Dragon branches

yearn and strive

despite winter cold

in early spring

blushing buds

burst into flame

petal-soft, powerful

as dragon breath

Snow White & Tummy Troubles Dr. Sue

What do you have in common with Snow White?

Are you pure as snow, wrinkle-free, with flat abs?

Are you tempted by witches?

Snow White’s witch may be “reel” (on film).

But tummy trouble is all too real.  Here are some tips based on my recent experience – and crowd-sourced from my Facebook friends.

If you’re really in pain, or it lingers, or you’re worried, see a medical doctor. I did and got much-needed antibiotics.  You could have a toxic infection, appendicitis or something serious, so get professional help.

If it’s a simple tummy-ache,  here is advice from my Facebook friends, who acted like real friends in my moment of need.  Thanks, guys. Here goes…

  1. Ginger Ale will help.(Gretta M. Heron)
  2. Drink apple cider vinegar works for me. (Jason Rupp)
  3. The best stuff for a messed up stomach? Carrot juice. I swear by it. (Ron McKechnie)
  4. Suck on some hard candy – my recommendation is Werther’s. If you are feeling better, chew some gum. Both will help your stomach prepare to have solid food again.Once you start semi solids, try some ginger chews (Trader Joes). It will help your stomach and digestion. (Laura Levinsky)
  5. Ginger Chews – they work. (Thomas Engstrom)
  6. One can of Coca-Cola will do the trick! Charcoal capsules are also good to absorb all the baddies and eliminate them. Now available in drugstores. But not if you’re taking antibiotics. You don’t want to eliminate the good stuff.(Melba LaRose)
  7. I always have mashed potatoes or baked potatoes as one of my first foods when coming back from a stomach bug.(Audra Hale-Maddox)
  8. Rest up. (Cheryl J. Fish)
  9.  Chamomile tea (Irene Market)
  10. Try Cream of Wheat. It works faster and better. Cola syrup helps too. (Merrilly Noeth)
  11. Lots of Healing Energy and Love (Rob Resnick)

Yes! Besides all the practical tips, I want to thank the many, many more friends who showed love and concern.

I honestly didn’t expect this outpouring of support – and it helped a lot!

Now that’s real/reel romance! Hugs2U Sue

Reel Romance & Food Poisoning by Dr. Sue

What do I have in common with movie star Glenn Close?

We were both poisoned!

Here’s Glenn, playing Queen Gertrude in Hamlet (Act V) Is she thinking: “The drink, the drink! I am poisoned.” (dies)

Or, like me, “Was is the under-cooked noodles or beef in my take-out soup?”

So here I am, with food-poisoning a few days before Thanksgiving, surviving on nutrition shakes, water, mush, and antibiotics.

The good news is the concern and advice of my friends – on and off Facebook. In case it’s helpful, I’ll share:

  1.  Charcoal capsules. Some folks don’t/can’t/won’t take antibiotics – this is great cleanser.
  2. Ginger chews: settle the tummy and come in chew-able candy.
  3. Coca Cola? My FB Friend Melba LaRose suggested a can of coke (works for her). Here’s my reply: “The Coca-Cola idea could be good..but last night I watched “Feud” and Joan Crawford peddled Pepsi. How can I be disloyal to Joan? Hollywood was rife with sexism and disloyalty (not like now). I need to follow the good example of our current producers and media stars.
  4. Entertainment/Reel Romance: After I said I would watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade on television, my FB friend offered: “Parade followed by the National Dog Show, followed by a repeat of the parade will cover most of your day…”

Here’s my reply: “After the parade, dog show, and repeat parade, I may shoot myself! That will solve the issue of solid food.”

Meantime, I’ll keep writing my Reel Romance Blog.

I invite you to take it as a challenge to connect the “real” world (including food poisoning) to the  “reel” world of movies, romance, fun, and friendship.

Here’s a cheerful photo of me from digestible days.

I’m drinking a  Reel Romance martini (with heart stirrer) that I’m using to toast my comedy “Reel Romance with a Twist!”

I’m on the red carpet of New York New Works Theatre Festival.

My “reel” cocktail is made of air, and the glass is made of plastic. Is the olive real or as fake as Glenn Close’ braid? Stay tuned.

Let me know if you’d like to include Reel Romance themes at your events. Please follow and like blog. You can put your comments on Facebook.  If I include your comments in my Blog, I’ll keep them anonymous – unless you give permission.
