What’s so special about New York New Works Theatre Festival?

First: there’s the fun, party-like atmosphere in the theatre lobby/bar.  You can single/mingle, find friends, or even meet real industry heavy weights, like Tony-Award winning Broadway producers, directors, writers, designers, etc.  (Here’s a tip – if the show starts at 7pm, show up at 6:30 and check out the crowd. Order a drink, which you can bring into the theatre – you’ll support the venue – which keeps your ticket price low.)

Second: there’s diversity. Each night offers a buffet of entertainment possibilities – five/six twenty minute excerpts from different shows. Festival selections include hilarious comedy, political cabaret (with parody songs), heart-wrenching drama, musical theatre (including a Broadway revival), sexy dance theatre, a puppet show for kids, etc. If you don’t like one show – stick around for the next. (Here’s a tip – there’s a short intermission between each show, so stand and stretch or chat with your neighbor – you may learn something or make a connection – and your legs will thank you. Wait? Do legs talk – well, maybe – in experimental theatre.)

Third: there’s the location and time – Times Square Arts Center -300 West 43rd Street/8th Ave. (2nd Floor) NYC – one block from Port Authority; 7pm – How easy is that? (If you absolutely have to leave early – you can do it during a short intermission.)

Fourth: there’s the price – only $20/ticket for a full evening of theatre. If you’re an audience member you can have fun and support your friends,  make new ones, and make your opinion count – (you can vote for your two favorite shows to make it to the finals and win prizes).

Fifth: if you’re a theatre artist, you get to showcase your show to industry pros and get feedback – for a reasonable cost.  Why? Because New York New Works Theatre Festival picks up most of your production cost and invites a panel of experts to give feedback and select (along with audience votes) the shows that make it to the finals.

“We wanted to make a difference.” says  Gene Fisch, Jr., founder and Festival Director. (The “We” includes Abby Judd, Festival Manager, and Melissa Gordon, Marketing, of Bear In Mind Creative.) “I noticed that many theatre festivals put a real financial strain on emerging artists – with little to show for it.  I thought – we can do better. New York New Works Theatre Festival aims to  include emerging artists in the Broadway community and offer guidance and real opportunities. – and several of our shows are on their way!”

“The International” is compelling theater and high-impact story-telling! Three characters from different parts of the world share tales of ordinary, seemingly disconnected lives.  But a genocidal war in Eastern Europe weaves them together in an ever-tightening braid of physical and spiritual carnage.  A bright, warm Moslem farm woman (Carey Van Driest) celebrates a neighbor’s wedding, and a well-meaning, Dutchman (Timothy Carter) with dreams of heroism and delusions of civility becomes an international peacekeeper.  But as enemy forces close in, their lives turn into a horrific news story that an unemployed American truck driver/failed artist with a shaky marriage (Ted Schneider) watches on television.

Playwright Tim Ruddy and Director Christopher Randolph commit to the power of language and passionate acting to bring this story to life on a bare stage surrounded by abstract paintings (set by James Maloof,  lighting by Derek Van Heel, sound design by Benjamin Furiga, costumes by Tristan Raines). The performers never interact, but we, the audience, become their confidantes, sharing their inner lives and common humanity.

“The International” is a co-production of The Origin Theatre, New York City (George C. TRU - Theater Resources UnlimitedTRU (Theater Resources Unlimited – www.truonline.org) hosts panels and workshops for theater professionals at all stages of their careers. Audiences and Speakers include Producers, Investors, Artists, and Self-Producing Artists (SPA’s – because it’s so relaxing to produce your own show 🙂 ) Panelists include Commercial Broadway Producers: Eric S. Goldman (Entertainment Attorney), Patrick Blake, Van Dean, Jeremy Handelman, Cheryl Wiesenfeld, and James L. Simon. Here are my notes from the panel – with questions:

Why People Invest – How to Pitch and Choose Projects

1. People invest and produce for different reasons, including: profit– everyone hopes to make money, but people may invest for other reasons – relationship to creative team and/or producer, experience – the thrill of being part of a glamour industry, with opening nights, parties, and the chance to mingle with stars, passion for the project – the artistry, message, etc.!

2. Is this show well-crafted? (I had the opportunity to successfully present my musical SSS…WITCH! ssswitch.net  as part of the TRU series “How To Write a Musical” – the experience was quite helpful!)

3. Does this show have a selling point? Is it based on a popular property? If so, does the producer and/or writer own the rights? Does it have a celebrity star? Will that star sell tickets?

4. Who is on the production team? Is there a capable general manager? Does it have a realistic budget? (cast size? sets? etc.)

S.A.F.E. – An Acronym for Smart Choices

1. S – What will Sell this Show?  A name-brand property? the concept? the celebrity star? the writing team?

2. A – Audience Who is your Target Audience (not “everyone” be specific – and spill over). Do these people go to the theatre?

3. F –  Funds How are your investors going to recoup their money – and how long will it take?  How many tickets do you have to sell – and how much will it cost to keep that show afloat? (You can make money beyond Broadway in stock and amateur rights. Musicals are more likely to tour than straight plays – and don’t forget licensing – shared by authors and sometimes producers!)

4. E – Environment What is happening in the world and current theater environment? Aim for relevance and avoid repetition.

Producers and Projects need to Match!

Producers choose shows for a several reasons – passion for the subject, love of the artistry, money-making potential, entertainment and fun, etc.  Nobody does everything well – or wants to – talent and funding need to match!

The Journey

Most shows don’t open on Broadway. They start in regional theatres, off (and off-off Broadway), festivals (for example, fringe and New York Musical Festival) London’s West End, International Venues, and today’s trend – the movie-cal a slick move from Screen to Stage!

The 2013 Drama Desk Luncheon at Sardi’s served up convivial buffet of seasoned Broadway actors. Moderated by Ronald Rand Founder/Publisher of The Soul of the American Actor, the panel included David Hyde Pierce (Frasier’s brother psychiatrist) and Kristine Nielsen (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike), Olivier Award Winner Bertie Carvel (Matilda), and Jane Houdyshell (Dead Accounts Wicked, Follies).  Topics included:

Acting vs. Life: Carvel asserted, “Acting is artifice –not life. Your job is to make it as lifelike as possible.”  Nielsen quoted Stella Adler, the famed acting teacher, “Your imagination is more interesting than your life.”

Comedic Acting: Pierce advises, “Tell story and be funny, humor is in writing. Comedy is musical and rhythmic. Really good actors have some kind of music in them.”

Acting in Farce, Fantasy and Musicals: Houdyshell, who performed in the fantasy musical Wicked, said,  “Wicked is a fantastical story, broader than life.  For and actor pretending comes from believing. When you wear a 35 pound costume and enormous wig, you know you must become something else!”

Directing:  Houdyshell stated, “I respond most creatively to directors who create a safe environment in rehearsal and don’t judge. I prefer collaborative directors who are interested in what actors bring to the table.”  Pierce added, “I recently started directing, which is natural for me. I’m always conscious of the arc of the whole story, not my character’s story.”

Audiences: Houdyshell commented, “Audiences sometimes don’t realize that the actors on-stage can hear them. I was once on stage pretending to be asleep, and these two ladies in the front row started arguing about whether I was a dummy.  The first one said, “I just saw her breathe.” The second one answered, “She’s a dummy – just look at her legs!”

Reviews: Pierce recalled the opening night of a play in which he played a lead role. After the show, he was sitting with his parents in a restaurant, and the reviews came out. The New York Times critic Frank Rich was very negative. The after-show party was cancelled and soon after that the production closed. Pierce said, “I just sat on that stage and cried – but I love this fantastic business!” Houdyshell nooded in rueful understanding.  “One reviewer said my accent was a thick as my ankles.  See, it always goes back to the legs.” Nielsen commented, “Reviews are a necessary evil. I don’t read them, but my friend does and gives me general tenor.” In contrast, Carvel, who reads all reviews said, “There are as many opinions as there are reviewers, and now with blogs, it’s infinite.  I forget the bad reviews.”

Happiness/Success Habits:

Take Reviews and Opinions with a Grain of Salt – take what’s helpful and ignore what’s useless or mean-spirited.  Most spiteful remarks come from ignorance, envy, or constipation (of the body or spirit.) This is easier said than done. As the great actress Ethel Barrymore quipped, “For an actress to be a success she must have the face of Venus, the brains of Minerva, the grace of Terpsichore, the memory of Macaulay, the figure of Juno, and the hide of a rhinoceros.”

Jean Brassard sings Yves Montand

“The Kid From Paris” Jean Brassard’s musical tribute to Yves Montand, offers a champagne magnum of masculine French charm, And why not? Brassard, a cabaret artist from Quebec, embodies Montand’s seductive charisma (he turned on the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Simone Signoret, and Edith Piaf) and persona as a working class hero (Montand was a passionate spokesman for the French proletariat).  Brassard sings the European songbook for American audiences with English and French chansons (songs). He plays the accordion with brio, and enacts episodes from Montand’s life.  Co-written and directed with Brassard’s partner David Krueger, with , musical direction by Richard Maheux, “The Kid From Paris” is a celebration of Montand’s talent and convictions brought  brilliantly to life by the kid from Quebec. Queen of the Mist rules Off-Broadway with an original, brilliant musical about the first woman to shoot Niagara Falls in a barrel.  In 1901 Anna Edson Taylor (Mary Testa), a 63 year old con-woman with poker-straight posture and a temper to match, has been run out of several towns and the home of her married sister Jane (Theresa McCarthy).  Out of cash and stalking fame and fortune, she pounces on her last possibility for greatness -a feat that will establish her as proto-feminist, self-described “phenomenon!”  To bring in “the green” through bookings on the lecture circuit, she hooks up with a hard-drinking manager, Frank Russell (Andrew Samonsky), and they unexpectedly fall into something like love – which turns out to be harder to navigate than the Falls.  Mono-focused on her own feat, Taylor inadvertently encourages a presidential assassin (Tally Sessions), insults hatchet-wielding Carrie Nation (Julia Murney), hires and fires new managers (DC Anderson), and sells her last promotional postcard to a boyish soldier (Stanley Bahorek) who is headed to the front lines of WWI. Single-minded focus, passion, planning, persistence, talent (like Anna’s scientific mind), and contempt for conventions – like ageist, sexist stereotypes – may make us a “phenomenon” and help us reach our goals. Arrogance, ambition, and the certainty that we are right can push us beyond the crowd and sometimes change the world.  But without compassion and compromise, we, like Anna, may wind up blind to the flawed people who love us  – a lonely queen of the mist of memory.

Duke Ellington Center for the Arts Presents Play about Oscar Wilde

Sometimes a raffle seems fixed by fate – or poetic justice. When renowned jazz pianist Frank Owens (a former musician in the Duke Ellington orchestra) won this group portrait of jazz greats by Kent Drake (a former singer) at the Duke Ellington Center Gala, the crowd erupted in applause!  It was the perfect climax to a series of performance salons that explores serendipitous connections between artists and history.Last night’s play “Blacker” written and directed by Russ Weatherford, set in 1898 Paris, stars Eric Rudy as Oscar Wilde – brilliant playwright, poet, critic, short story writer – master of the gem-cut epigram and victim of British laws against sodomy.  Wilde, recently out of a jail, ill, and financially strapped, desperately needs money from his wife’s estate.  The key player in his access to the funds is Carlos Blacker (played by Rutherford), who is both drawn to and aghast at Wilde’s life style (including the new, male lover in his bed).  Blacker is also part of a plan to free Alfred Dreyfus, the French Jewish army captain who has been framed for treason (with the connivance of the French government) and languishes in jail as anti-Semitic mobs take to the Paris streets.   Blacker confides in Wilde – sharing details and names of a secret group of influential men dedicated to freeing Dreyfus.

Did Wilde reveal and ruin Blacker’s plan as revenge when his funds are cut off?  Wilde denies it, but the truth is shrouded in uncertainty, bright surfaces, dark shadows, and paradox – like Wilde’s dazzling wit. The gifted cast performs with passion and polish; Eric Rudy’s sets and costumes are exquisite; and cocktail treats by Spoonbread Catering were yummy! Many thanks to our hostess Mercedes Ellington, granddaughter of Duke Ellington.

Happiness Habits:

  • Do what you love – and be who you are.  Oscar Wilde wore a green carnation – an elegant artifice like his wit – and a nod to his dandyism, gender-bender lifestyle, and Irish roots.
  • Be happy for someone else – if you can.  Frank Owens knew many of the jazz greats in the portrait, is well-liked, and would get tremendous satisfaction out of owning the painting.  It made it even better that he’s a personal friend of the artist Kent Drake. Sometimes saying “we’re happy for someone else” feels phony, but in this case it was heartfelt.
